What is your favorite place to ride? This is one of the questions we get asked all the time. Whether it is from our guests on bicycle trips in Europe or whilst providing our cycling services in Mallorca. To be honest – it’s a hard question to answer but we do have a short list of our favorites and this time we’re going to tell you about some of our favorite cycling destinations in Mallorca, that seem to be off the radar so many cyclists riding in Mallorca.
Everyone knows Sa Colobra, the Ma-10 road, Puig Major, and other cycling destinations and routes in the Tramunta mountains but we do get the impression that very few cyclists go cycling in the east of Mallorca where it’s relatively flat or rather rolling terrain.
Besides being less busy in terms of traffic and other cyclists, there are a few monasteries you can set as your ride destination. Start the ride on flat or rolling terrain, and do a relatively easy climb. Soak in the views at the top, enjoy the descent and spin out the legs on the rolling hills on the return home.
Here are three of our favorite cycling destinations in the central and eastern parts of Mallorca that we do recommend visiting. Maybe you even are up for a challenge to ride them all in one day?
Puig de Randa is popular among cyclists for its scenic views and challenging climb. It offers stunning panoramas of the island and the Mediterranean Sea. The road to the summit is narrow and winding, providing a challenging but rewarding experience for cyclists looking to test their skills and endurance. With an altitude of 533 meters, it is one of the highest points on the island, and the ascent provides a good workout for experienced riders. The climb is 4.7km long with a 245m vertical rise and an average gradient of 5.2%. There is also a cafe and a restaurant you can enjoy a coffee break or book a dinner.
The Sant Salvador climb in the Llevant Mountains in eastern Mallorca boasts scenic hairpin turns and lush forests. Despite the challenging ascent, the view from the summit on a clear day is worth the effort and there is also a small museum showcasing cycling world champion jerseys from various eras. The climb is 5.3 km long with 322 vertical rise and an average gradient of 6.1%. The top of the ascent is located at 466 meters above sea level.
Ermita de Bonany from Petra is 3.4 km long climb with 169 vertical rise and an average gradient of 5%. The top of the ascent is located at 281 meters above sea level. But don’t be misled by the average gradient, this is a challenging ascent. The final 2 km are steep, making your legs ache by the time you reach the hermitage. There is no bar or restaurant at the top but a vending machine is available for a quick drink. Nonetheless, the views from the top make the climb worthwhile.
Next time you are in Mallorca be sure to ride up at least one of these favorite cycling destinations in Mallorca if you haven’t already. We are sure you are going to love the climbs that are not as long and steep as in the mountains and the views from the top even more so.
Don’t let distance keep you from experiencing these amazing routes. Take advantage of our Private Cycling Shuttle service and we’ll either pick you up before the ride or drop you off after the ride at your accommodation. That way, you can enjoy more of Mallorca’s cycling destinations without sacrificing too much effort. Happy cycling!
