This summer, we embarked on a stunning 10-day private cycling tour through the heart of the Tatra Mountains, crossing the border between Poland and Slovakia. The journey took us through some of the most beautiful and lesser-known landscapes in Europe, winding through charming towns, scenic villages, and historic landmarks. Our guests, a group of cycling enthusiasts from New Zealand, returned for another adventure with HC Bike Tours, and this time, they were in for a real treat.
From the moment we started the tour in Bratislava, we knew we were about to experience something special. Our route took us into the Slovak countryside, through small villages and past breathtaking mountain views. Our first stop was Zilina, a lively city surrounded by rolling hills, followed by Dolny Kubin, a charming town nestled in the valley beneath the towering Tatra peaks. Along the way, our riders were already indulging in the local flavors—hearty bryndzové halušky, a traditional dish of potato dumplings topped with sheep cheese, was a favorite to fuel up for the day ahead.
Cycling through Zakopane, the Polish mountain resort town, was another highlight of the trip. Known for its distinct wooden architecture and vibrant cultural life, Zakopane is the gateway to the High Tatras, and it was here that we truly began to feel the challenge of the mountainous terrain. The riders pushed themselves up steep climbs, rewarded by spectacular views and a taste of oscypek, the famous smoked cheese of the region, often served with a dollop of marmalade or a sprinkle of herbs. It was the perfect treat after a challenging ride.
As we continued our journey, we made our way to Tatranska Lomnica, a small village nestled at the foot of the High Tatras. Known for its alpine beauty, the area is perfect for cyclists looking for a mix of adventure and tranquility. The ride here was not just a physical challenge but a journey through history. We passed Orava Castle, a striking medieval fortress perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valley. The castle, dating back to the 13th century, was a perfect spot to pause and reflect on the region’s rich past.
The cycling wasn’t all about tough climbs and scenic vistas. We took plenty of opportunities to explore the local culture, whether it was stopping at a village market for fresh fruit and pastries or relaxing at a local restaurant. One of the most memorable meals was in Liptovsky Mikulas, where we tried trout dishes fresh from the nearby rivers—another testament to the region’s culinary diversity.
As we cycled towards Banska Bystrica, we entered the heart of Slovakia’s mining history. This town, rich in culture and heritage, gave us a chance to rest and enjoy the local fare. The flavors of lamb stew and zemiaková placka (crispy potato pancakes) were a warm comfort after a challenging ride through the surrounding mountains.
Our guests, who had joined us from New Zealand, were once again amazed by the seamless logistics and exceptional support from our team. Ride Leader Artis Kalveits, who you may remember from our Slovenia tour, guided the group through the sometimes challenging routes with ease and enthusiasm. Supported by our SAG driver Karlis Smilktens, the team ensured that every detail was taken care of—whether it was adjusting bikes, offering on-road snacks, or assisting with any mechanical issues. The combination of self-guided exploration and full support allowed the cyclists to focus on what mattered most: enjoying the journey.
Throughout the tour, we kept our riders fueled with on-road snacks, fresh fruits, local pastries, and sports nutrition to help them maintain energy levels. The HC team made sure they had everything they needed, from water and soft drinks to electrolyte-rich snacks, ensuring that they could ride without any worries.
As the tour came to a close in Bratislava, the riders reflected on the journey. The challenges of cycling through the towering Tatra mountains were met with a sense of accomplishment and awe. From Zakopane’s charming wooden houses to the rugged beauty of the Orava Castle, every day brought new discoveries and unforgettable moments. The combination of cycling through stunning landscapes and enjoying authentic local cuisine made this tour an experience like no other.
This private cycling tour through the Tatra Mountains was a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and cycling excellence. We can’t wait to take this group of riders on their next unforgettable journey.
