We at HC Bike Tours are very excited to see many of you returning, and welcome new faces. Get ready for different scenery, languages, cultures and challenging climbs. Mozart`s town Salzburg is our starting place for your 2022 bike tour. The HC team will arrive in Salzburg few days early to help you with transfers from the Salzburg airport to the hotel. We encourage to arrive early to acclimate and so that we can go on a warm-up ride today. Your day will start with setting up your bicycle, the HC team will be ready to help you out. And you are off to Germany!? Yes, indeed! Our destination is Hitler’s former mountain-top base the Eagle’s Nest. It`s not possible to ride bikes up there, but we’ll watch your bikes while you take their busses. The views are fantastic, and the place is full of history. If you are up to ride a little more, it`s worth the suffering to take a detour via Rossfeld Panorama Strasse – Rossfeld Panoramic road. The name says it all!

The Salzkammergut is an unofficial region of Austria with some 76 lakes. It`s a very popular destination for summer and winter outdoor tourism. You will ride along several of the region`s lakes. The main coffee stop is going to be in Hallstatt. This tiny village with its 16th-century Alpine houses looks unbelievable pretty, even surreal.

This is going to be a real challenge. The Grossglockner is a famous cycling climb in the Austrian Alps, a real beast, never ending 20+km long with a very steady about 12 km long section of an average 10-12% steep grade! It is also a highest peak of the Austrian Alps (3,797 m). Having the right gearing will make all the difference, so if your own bike doesn’t have low gears, consider renting a Sarto bike from us! The surrounding mountainous region is part of the Hohe Tauern National Park, full of stunning panoramas everywhere you look. After the climb is completed, we will ride down to Lienz, where we are staying the next two nights.

Day off in Lienz
After the mighty Grossglockner, it’s time for a day off – or at least a more leisurely day. You can explore Lienz, or take the mountain cable car to Lienzer Schlossberg to go hiking on Hochstein, or we can take you on a short easy ride. Lienz has many things to offer, making it a perfect ‘recovery day’ location!

Distance - 130 km (81 mi) / Climb – 2,500 m (8,202 ft)
We have two possible rides for you for today > one is a short relatively easy ride along the river Drava and Kreuzberg climb towards to the end, the other is a long ride which starts with several difficult hills through many tiny villages with scenery you will not want to miss. As a reward, starting from the village of Kartitsch, you’ll finish the day with almost 90 km of mostly downhill rolling terrain!

Goodbye Austria, Hello Slovenia! Slovenia welcomes you with its highest mountain pass Vršič (1,611 m). Some might say it`s nothing compared to the mighty Grossglockner, but its 50 bends and average 8.2 % grade over 9.25 km make it spectacular in its own right.
You will stay in the Soca valley for the next two nights in the village of Bovec. The valley is famous for its perfectly clear turquoise waters of the Soca river, narrow gorges, and many waterfalls.

The Mangart Road that leads over Mangart Saddle, with its elevation of 2,055 m has a number of turns and is the highest-lying road in Slovenia. And it is THE climb to compare with the Grossglockner, offering > 25 km all uphill with some ramps up to 20% grade! Definitely worth it to ride this beast!

On the last day, you will ride to Ljubljana. The plan is to do a relatively short easy ride to give you enough time to explore the town. And it has a lot to offer. The town is lively with many bars and restaurants, the historic castle on the top of a hill, the river Ljubljanica in the middle of the historic town, it`s an undiscovered city to explore.
