This year once again, HC Bike Tours partnered with South Perth Rouleurs (SPR) Cycling Club from Australia to create an unforgettable cycling adventure through the French Alps. Over 16 days and 15 nights, 13 cyclists tackled the iconic Route des Grandes Alpes, a challenging yet rewarding journey from Geneva to Nice.
Covering 740 kilometers with a staggering elevation gain of 19,000 meters, this guided and SAG van-supported tour was nothing short of monumental. Riders conquered legendary Tour de France climbs, including the Col de la Colombière, Cormet de Roseland, Col de l’Iseran, Col du Galibier, and Col d’Izoard. These peaks, etched in cycling lore, pushed every participant to their limits while offering views of the majestic French Alps that took their breath away—literally and figuratively.
From the green pastures and winding roads of Geneva to the sun-drenched coastline of Nice, each day brought a new adventure. Riders faced grueling ascents but were rewarded with thrilling descents, picturesque villages, and serene alpine landscapes. Along the way, they indulged in French culinary delights, from hearty mountain fare to elegant coastal cuisine, savoring every bite as a well-earned reward.
The tour was expertly led by HC Bike Tours founder Aigars Paegle and SPR’s own Christophe Borrel Ducroz. Their leadership, area knowledge, and attention to every detail ensured the riders could focus on the journey ahead without worrying about logistics. Whether it was mechanical support, mid-ride snacks, or a motivational word during the toughest climbs, the team provided invaluable support.
The trip wasn’t without its challenges. Illness struck a few riders, testing their resilience and camaraderie. However, the spirit of the SPR Cycling Club shone through as the group supported each other to keep going. Each climb was a collective triumph, every descent a shared joy, and the bonds forged on the road will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
The journey concluded at a stunning hotel overlooking the azure waters of the Mediterranean. As the group celebrated their achievement, reflecting on two weeks of cycling highs and lows, the sense of accomplishment was palpable. The SPR riders had taken on the French Alps and emerged victorious, ticking off bucket-list climbs and creating memories they’ll treasure forever.
